Heritage Days - Birkenfels Castle

Photos

Présentation

Located in the forest of Obernai, the castle of Birkenfels was built around 1250 or 1260 by Burkhard Beger, a minister of the bishop of Strasbourg. After the Thirty Years' War, it fell into ruin and was given to the city of Obernai. In 1983, important restoration works on the walls and the fortification tower of the of the keep were undertaken (classified as a historic monument in 1984). Since 2008, a team of volunteers from the association Art et Patrimoine d'Obernai ensures the preservation of the castle through maintenance and cleaning. The castle is easily accessible on foot (30 mn) from the Bloss crossroads where the D 854 going to the Mont Sainte-Odile and the D 426 going from Barr to the Mont Sainte-Odile meet. From the crossroads (parking lot), walk along the path (green ring towards Birkenfels) which joins the marked route of the blue cross leading to the castle.
