Guided tour of the Four à Chaux fortress - Maginot Line

As part of the European Heritage Days, take a guided tour of this imposing Maginot Line fortress, built into a limestone hill between 1930 and 1935. Perfectly preserved, it still contains many period features. Its location on a limestone hill to the south of the village of Lembach makes it a very special fortress: visitors enter the upper gallery of the fortress at ground level through the men's entrance, then go under the hill to end up 30 m underground in the heart of the fortress. From here, the visitor reaches the lower gallery via the 215-step Inclined Plan staircase, before exiting via the ammunition entrance. Visitors will go from the barracks, where the 580 men who occupied the fort during mobilisation lived, and where they can discover the kitchens, dormitories and hospital, to the officers' quarters and the central command post. They will then visit one of the combat blocks, where the guide will give a demonstration of how the artillery turret worked, before discovering the engine room, the multi-purpose room and a museum...
