The Cave of the Dwarfs

Présentation

The Cave of the Dwarfs is essentially a place of legend where one can practice rock climbing.
The rocks of the Cave of the Dwarfs form an impressive gorge about 25 meters high called Erdwibalaschlucht (parade of little women of the earth) formed by the action of water on limestone karst. According to legend, these little women of the earth lived with the Erdmanala (little men of the earth) inside the Cave of the Dwarfs. Situated at the bottom of the gorge, the cave takes on the appearance of a slit in the rock wall and continues with two passageways, the whole thing covering over fifteen metres.
Above the gorge, one can access the Plateau of the Dwarfs. From there, one has a beautiful view of the Ill valley and the villages of Bouxwiller and Werentzhouse. The place is also known as Erdwibalafelsen (Fairies' Rock).
Access: park at the Ferrette Tourist Information Centre and take the red diamond trail along the road to Sondersdorf. It takes about 30 or 35 min (1.8km)It is possible to park in the Keucht carpark located in the forest but the access road is a very poor forest path! From the carpark there is a 15-20 min walk along a beautiful trail.
