With rapid industrial development, the basin created at the current railway station became too small, and the Nouveau Bassin was dug and completed in 1876. It is fed by the Ill River, which rises at this point after flowing underground through the city, and by the Rhone-Rhine Canal. A new industrial hub grew up around it, such as the Laederich spinning mill, which opened in 1883 (on the site of the Filature), and the abattoirs (on the site of the Kinéopolis). With the opening of the port of Ile Napoléon, it ceased to be used in 1962.
The Nouveau Bassin is now a green, cool spot in the city, welcoming many walkers. It is also home to contemporary works of art that can be discovered along the way.
