Gabriel Braeuner is a historian, permanent secretary of the Alsace Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, host of the Café de l'Humanisme and former President of the Friends of the Humanist Library.
Passionate about European history, particularly Franco-German history, he specialises in the history of the 15th and 16th centuries (Humanism and the Reformation), the cultural history of Alsace in the 18th century and the Reichsland period. A regular contributor to the regional magazine Saisons d'Alsace, for which he has written numerous articles, he also writes regular history columns in the DNA newspaper and in the magazine Espoir, published by the association of the same name. He is also the author of numerous publications.
A Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (2004), he was awarded a Bretzel d'Or by the Académie des Sciences et Traditions d'Alsace in 2014 for his contributions to the history of Alsace. The town of Sélestat named him an honorary citizen in November 2019 for his active and ongoing contribution to the reopening of the Bibliothèque Humaniste in June 2018.
