The Witches' Tower is a Gothic doorway dating from the 15th century. It was redesigned in 1830; its roof is recent. It is one of the most beautiful doors in Alsace and one of the most represented (marquetry, drawings by Hansi, Bernard Buffet). This tower, which has been called the "Witches' Tower", recalls that Châtenois, like so many other cities, has undergone unfair trials during which several people accused of witchcraft were burned. In 1870 the Witches' Tower was hit by a cannonball, but did not suffer any major damage.
