The Tanners' Quay

This is one of the most picturesque lanes in Sélestat. Up until the fifteenth century, the whole width was taken up by the Gerberbach, the tanners’ river, which lapped against the base of the workshops built on stilts. These buildings disappeared for good in 1912 when the river was transformed into a canal. The quay still has many half-timbered, medieval houses, notably numbers 1 and 6.
