The magic of strings

Ensemble instrumental Volutes, conducted by Etienne Bardon.

Fantasy on a theme by Thomas Tallis, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Baal Shem by Ernest Bloch, for solo violin and instrumental ensemble (Orchestration Etienne Bardon). Soloist: Daniel Elbaz.

Chamber Symphony op.110a, Dmitri Shostakovich.

Les Heures Musicales is delighted to welcome back the Strasbourg string ensemble Volutes and its founding conductor Etienne Bardon. We all remember Haydn's Nelson Mass in 2006 with the Maîtrise de Metz, also back this year, as well as the 2008 concert with P. I. Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence and a highly emotional prayer for cello by Ernest Bloch. For his return to the Ried abbey church, E. Bardon offers the piece Baal Shem, for solo violin and instrumental ensemble, by the same composer inspired by Hebrew music. Etienne Bardon has written an orchestration especially for his ensemble. To open the concert, the musicians will perform a work by British composer Ralph Vaughan-Williams dating from 1910. The work takes its name from the author of the original melody, Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585). Tallis' original theme was one of nine he composed for Archbishop Matthew Parker's 1567 Psalter. This work was used in the soundtrack to Peter Weir's film Master and Commander (2003). Finally, Russian music will be in the spotlight, with Dmitri Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony op.110a, about which the composer wrote: ‘I told myself that if I died one day, no one would think of writing a work in my memory. So I decided to write it myself. You're never better served than by yourself!
