The first part of this circuit is relatively flat, and is a good warmup before you tackle the main ascent of the day - le Ballon d'Alsace.
From Sewen, the ascent up the Ballon is 13km, with an average incline of 5%. At the beginning of the ascent, admire Alfred Lake. At the top, you get a magnificent view over the Vosges mountain range, and on clear days, you can see the Alps and the Black Forest.
Once you have descended towards St-Maurice-sur-Moselle, you will climb the Col de Bussang, which is much less difficult than the Ballon d'Alsace. At this point, you will have finished with the mountains until you return to Guebwiller. Be careful on the N66 from Bussang to Thann (24km).
