Discover Rhinau Island - Immerse yourself in the wilderness

.

Between the Old Rhine and the canalized Rhine, the isle of Rhinau stretches 10 km long and up to 400 meters wide, forming a veritable little Alsatian Rhine jungle. Over nearly 450 hectares, including 311 classified as a Nature Reserve, this jewel of preserved nature invites you to take a stroll... on foot, by bike, or even in a flat-bottomed boat!

This unique mosaic of alluvial forests, wet meadows, reed beds, ponds and streams is home to exceptional biodiversity. Dragonflies, amphibians, rare fish and, above all, numerous birds find refuge here. In winter, the island becomes a prized sanctuary for wintering migratory birds, in conjunction with the neighboring Taubergiessen reserve in Germany.

.

But beware, this lush nature is also fragile. The island, subject to the seasonal flooding of the Rhine, evolves over time and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these unique ecosystems.

Eager to learn more? The Conservatoire des Sites Alsaciens offers guided outings to explore this amazing island and better understand the natural balances at play.
