The witches' tower - Sélestat



Commonly called “ The Witches’ Tower”, it is the former low gate (Niedertor) which opens through the first wall of fortifications (1216) on to Strasburg. The lancet arch passage was blocked, the upper floor was used as prison especially in the XVIIth century for witches before their execution. The ground-floor was used as storage for rammed earth and war equipment In 1774.
