Ornithological observatory of the Rohrmatten
Hollockweg, 67600 Selestat
Located in the Ill*Wald, a regional nature reserve, the Rohrmatten site (about 14 ha) is a former poplar grove damaged by a storm in 1988, developed as a reed bed by the City of Selestat between 1992 and 1995.
After harvesting the logs from the storm, and leaving the stumps in place, a network of water bodies, ponds and channels was created to provide a variety of habitats for wildlife. This area is home to more than 130 species of birds that nest, feed or stop over here for migration. It is also a spawning ground for pike and a privileged place to live for beavers, reintroduced in 1999.
Finally, the Rohrmatten represent a remarkable botanical site, in particular through the presence of heritage species included in the regional list of protected species, such as the marsh euphorbia.
New access since this autumn via the pedestrian footbridge of the B.10 dam on the Marckolsheim road and motor vehicle stop area at the entrance to the Hollockgraben.
