The unicorn, a mythical animal dating back more than 3,000 years, is the emblem of Saverne.
It is said to have been chosen by the people of Saverne for its purity and courage, qualities that made Saverne an impregnable town. Another version tells of a unicorn that dipped its horn in the waters of the Badbrunne (bathing spring), which was already used to bathe in Roman times, and gave it healing and therapeutic powers. Because of this, many pilgrims and famous people passing through Saverne would take some of this water with them throughout the Middle Ages.
Today, this symbol is most often seen on the local beer*.
