Its long history is remarkable. Shoppers and shoppers have been meeting in the streets of the town for almost 700 years. Seven centuries of transactions have set the pace for life in Sélestat, in a setting with a cultural heritage that cannot be ignored, and where the players navigate their way through the colourful stalls.
Mentioned in archive documents as far back as the end of the 14th century, the Sélestat market is held every Tuesday morning. A firm favourite with residents from all over central Alsace around Sélestat, the market is home to some 150 non-sedentary traders every week.
Market gardeners and local producers, caterers, bakers, cheesemongers, poultry, ready-made meals, butchers, delicatessens, local and organic caterers make up the wealth of food on offer. Handicrafts, clothing, florists... complete a range that caters for all tastes and budgets.
The Tuesday morning market is a place to meet and stroll around, a place for socialising and getting to know each other. It's part of the lively life of our town, and is increasingly popular, especially in the summer and at Christmas, when it attracts a large number of tourists.
