St. Barbara Arsenal - Former hall and granary

Présentation

At the heart of the pedestrian area and its shops is the Arsenal Sainte-Barbe. A Gothic-style building built in 1470 on the site of the former medieval synagogue. In 1534, due to a lack of space in the Saint-Hilaire arsenal, weapons were stored there, hence its name of Arsenal Sainte Barbe, patron saint of artillerymen. In the 19th century, it regained its original function (storage of wheat, tobacco and hops). In 1901, the first floor was converted into an auditorium and then transformed into a meeting room. The second floor was then used as a festival hall. These functions of festival hall and meeting room are still its current functions. A double-flight staircase is built above the Gothic door on the ground floor. The magnificent gable gable with its teeth, characteristic of the Rhine Renaissance, is topped by a thick stork's nest, which adds to the picturesque character of the building. At the corner of the facades is a statue of Saint Barbara from the 20th century.
